Woven through the black are soft areas of salmon-pink feldspar, a mineral that often grows right alongside tourmaline in granite, so no two spheres look alike. Black tourmaline is associated with the root chakra, the element of Earth, and the planet Saturn. Its name comes from the Sinhalese word turmali, used for the mixed gemstones found in Sri Lankan gravels. Dutch traders once called it the "ash puller," because a warmed piece would draw ash out of a tobacco pipe. In spiritual practice it's traditionally used for grounding and for shielding your energy and your home.
